Pagans past and present, tell me about the symbolism of the stag?

I found a necklace today, a fine brass chain with a small stag pendant. It also came with a chunk of agate and a silver leaf, both of which i removed (but have reused elsewhere), i now feel very attached to this fragile piece of jewellery, i’ve never had any sort of interest or affinity with this animal before (though i am an animal lover).

The stag is a symbol i don’t use in my life, but i know that it is a symbol in certain parts of paganism. Now, i know i can google this, but i’d like to hear from you what (if any) meaning does it have to you and/or the certain branch of paganism you are on.

he is lord of the forests and wild animals, guardian of the underworld, and god of fertility. he is often shown meditating in nature surrounded by wild animals and adorned with symbols of prosperity. he is highly sexual and protective of his charges. i’ve found him to be an excellent companion and guide.
